Science Olympiad Background
The Science Olympiad is a nationally recognized program for enhancing science education and interest in the STEM field. It is a science competition for teams of up to 15 students competing in 23 different age-related events over the course of the day. The activities emphasize doing and applying science. Teams advance from regional to state to national competitions.
Science Olympiad enhances STEM education, builds community relations with local and more distant High Schools (for Division C), and engages students with hands-on experiences that prepare them for college and beyond. Students specialize in subjects of their choice, such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, geology, math, physics, and technology.
Our Science Olympiad tournament brings hundreds of the top students from many Georgia High Schools to our Clarkston campus of Perimeter College. They interact with our great faculty, experience our campus and what Perimeter College is, and hopefully consider a future STEM pathway with Georgia State University.
Our Event Supervisors are STEM professionals and subject matter experts who make tournaments fun and competitive for students. Using the Rules Manuals as guidelines, Event Supervisors create tests or hands-on challenges and are in charge of scoring.
Our Tournament Directors are also STEM professionals and subject matter experts that not only function as Event Supervisors, but take on additional roles. Some of these roles include: complying with GSU policies for minors on campus with competing teams, faculty/staff/volunteers, facilities; event logistics (rooms, schedule, public safety, janitorial/facility services); account management (supplies, GSU services, event supervisor thank you gift); reviewing events created by event supervisors; office duties for organizing all event files, printing tests, score compilation; creating and running a quiz bowl while event scores are being tallied and finalized on the event day; and communication with team coaches, State Directors, and GSU administration.
Perimeter College hosts a Division C regional event each year for high school students for at least 25 years. We have teams from Georgia high schools participating each year. Up until 2022 we have hosted 24 teams each year. Starting in 2023 we will be hosting 36 teams each year.
