Mobile devices: Mobile devices are defined as any electronic device that can connect to the internet and/or store information that is known or unknown. This includes, but is not limited to, smart phones, tablets, laptops, chromebooks, web books, computers, kindle devices, smart watches, and smart glasses. Mobile devices are not allowed in any event unless specifically stated in the PC specific rules.
Calculators: Various types of calculators are listed for the different events. No calculator which is internet capable will be allowed for any event. SmartPhone, tablets, or other mobile devices will not be allowed as a calculator substitute. All calculators must be actual calculators created to function solely as a calculator. The following definitions will be used for the Perimeter College ScienceOlympiad event.
The official rules describing calculators can be found in the current years science Olympiad Division C Rules Manual.
A quick reference guide to calculators is shown below. The requirements and rules will follow the official rules manual. The National Science Olympiad website contains policies for tournaments, which may include information for calculator guides, eye protection, lasers, and/or building and tool policies.
Class I = Non-programmable, non-graphing calculator dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that cannot store information beyond a simple "M+" button and cannot create graphs. This can include a simple calculator or a basic scientific calculator. An example shown below is the simple calculator.
Class II = Calculator of any type dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that includes a simple calculator, basic scientific calculator, and/or a graphing / programmable calculator. An example shown below is the basic scientific calculator.
Class III = Dedicated calculator of any kind dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that includes includes a simple calculator, basic scientific calculator, and/or a graphing / programmable calculator. An example shown below is the graphing / programmable calculator.
