Requesting Letters of Recommendation

Letters on a table.

Dr Hollier will only provide letters of recommendation to students who get either an A or a B as their overall course grade. To request a letter of recommendation you must give me four weeks notice before the date that you require it. You must also e-mail the following information to my college e-mail address ( mhollier@gsu.edu ). If you only have an electronic request sent to me without providing the information below, I will not be able to write you a letter of recommendation.

  • Your full name and what personal pronoun you use to refer to yourself (he, she, they, ze, ve, etc.).
  • Which course(s) you took with me and which semester you took each of those courses.
  • The full name and address of the college/university you are applying to.
  • The name of the program that you are applying for as listed on the application form.
  • Your science class course grades for all science courses taken at PERIMETER COLLEGE.
  • Your current GPA.
  • A list and brief description of any volunteering / community service you have performed within the last two years.
  • Any information that you are including on your application that I am expected to know.
  • The date that you require the letter(s) by.
  • Dr Hollier will only provide letters of recommendation that he directly uploads or emails to the institute / entity / online protal system they are being submitted to. Dr Hollier does NOT provide letters of recommendation to students to upload, pass on, to advisors not directly linked to the institute the student is applying to, and/or copies for students to see.
    • Institutes / entities requiring letters of recommendation expect the person writing the letter of recommendation to be honest in their recommendation. These institutes / entities often will view a letter given to the student as not being fully honest, open, and/or containing omissions. This is human nature. No one wants to rate anyone asking for a letter of recommendation as anything but the best person in the world if they must hand the letter to the person. Institutes / entities requesting letters of recommendation use those letters to make informed decisions, and they want honest and open letters of recommendation to be able to make that decision.
    • Most institutes / entities require applicants to sign a waiver that they either will or will not request a copy of the letter of recommendation. For a faculty member to give a copy directly to the student could violate those terms the applicant agreed to with the institute. Faculty do not know the terms that have been agreed between the institute / entity and the applicant, and so the safest option is not to provide the letter directly to the applicant. Some institutes / entities will only accept letters of recommendation if the applicant signed the waiver agreeing they will not see it in any form. Signing that you will request a copy of the letter of recommendation may mean that the institute / entity  does not accept that letter.
  • If you are applying to the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions (Georgia State University) then you also need to send me the following information exactly as you entered it on your online application:
    • Student name.
    • Panther ID number.
    • Student email.
    • Program you are applying to (Traditional, ACE, or ACE and traditional)
    • Term you are applying for.
  • Whether the letter will be submitted electronically or whether you need it printed and placed in a signed and sealed envelope.
    • If it will be electronically submitted, then enter my information into their system (Dr Mark Hollier, Associate Professor of Biology, mhollier@gsu.edu , 678-891-3779, 555 N.Indian Creek Dr, Clarkston, GA 30021). It is your responsibility to ensure that any required information I need for submitting your letter of recommendation electronically is sent to my email address.
    • For printed letters, specify the full address that should go on the front of the envelope. Also indicate if you want to pick it up from me or if I am to mail it directly to the address you provided.

If you were written up for cheating and/or plagiarism, or decide to let your class work “fall in to the hands” of students after you leave my classes, your name will be black listed for letters of recommendation. If you do request a letter of recommendation under these situations, Dr. Hollier will either decline writing you a letter, or write a letter of recommendation including general information about your lack of integrity and ethics.
