Mobile devices: Mobile devices are defined as any electronic device that can connect to the internet and/or store information. This includes, but is not limited to, smart phones, tablets, laptops, chromebooks, web books, kindle devices, smart watches, and smart glasses. Mobile devices are not allowed in any event unless specifically stated in the PC specific rules.

Calculators: Various types of calculators are listed for the different events. No calculator which is internet capable will be allowed for any event. SmartPhone, tablets, or other mobile devices will not be allowed as a calculator substitute. All calculators must be actual calculators created to function solely as a calculator. The following definitions will be used for the Perimeter College ScienceOlympiad event.

"The phrase “…a calculator dedicated to computation…” refers to a standalone or dedicated calculator. With these calculators their functionality is limited to mathematical calculations or associated activities such as running simple computational programs or producing graphs. This means that digital or electronic calculators such as those found as an application on a computer, tablet, watch, or cellular phone are not permitted for use in Science Olympiad events. In some events there are no limits to the functionality that the calculator may possess. In other events, the calculators may not have features that allow them to run programs or create graphs. With the ever-changing landscape around calculators and other personal electronic devices Science Olympiad is not in the position to be able to review and permission specific calculator manufacturers or specific calculator models. In every case, the decisions of the Event Supervisors concerning the acceptability of a specific calculator type for an event at a tournament shall be considered final." (This excerpt is taken from the National Science Olympiad website available here).

Non-programmable, non-graphing calculator dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that cannot store information beyond a simple "M+" button and cannot create graphs. This can include a simple calculator or a basic scientific calculator.

Calculator of any type dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that includes a simple calculator, basic scientific calculator, and/or a graphing / programmable calculator.

Dedicated calculator of any kind dedicated to computation = a standalone or dedicated calculator that includes includes a simple calculator, basic scientific calculator, and/or a graphing / programmable calculator.

The images below show examples of simple calculators, basic scientific calculators, and graphing / programmable calculatorsto be used as a basis for the above definitions. The images represent examples only and do not specify any brand or model version must match these examples.
