Students are required to submit one or more lab reports on a laboratory exercise in which the scientific method is used. Experiments are performed in groups, but reports are written up individually (see cheating and plagiarism section). Which exercises are written up as lab reports is indicated in the class schedule along with the due dates for each report.
Microbiology Lab Reports in Dr Hollier’s class require you to complete the “Micro Lab Report Template” for each lab report. In this template you will insert a picture of your results (taken using your phone) and discuss the results. The discussion part requires you to interpret your descriptions (what a color actually means, such as a yellow color means acid was produced for the fermentation tests) and explain why (phenol red turns yellow under acidic conditions). You will lose points if you only describe your results and give no explanation. If you made errors, describe and interpret what you did wrong and discuss what should have occurred.
Grading rubric for Micro lab reports:
Section |
Percentage of lab report grade |
Results |
50% |
Discussion |
50% |
Total |
100% |
Points will be deducted proportionately for not meeting requirements. Examples:
ALL Lab report files must be named as follows: Last name, First name – Lab report # (e.g. Hollier, Mark – Lab report 1).
Dr Hollier will check your lab report if you print it off and bring it to class or tutoring hours. Dr Hollier will NOT review lab reports sent through email. This is so Dr Hollier can explain things to you and see what you are understanding and what you are not understanding. Dr Hollier cannot check for plagiarism on a printed copy of the lab report.
